Just as Holocaust Memorial Week often includes presentations on comparative genocide, so do we sponsor events on major episodes of human rights abuse. The topic of Luhui Whitebear’s talk on April 28 also fits the OSU calendar in that April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month.

The scope of the problem that Luhui Whitebear will address is not widely recognized by the American media, but it is considerable. In 2016 The National Crime and Information Center reported that 5712 Indigenous women and girls were missing. The problem is persistent, yet few cases are ever solved.

Dr. Whitebear is an assistant professor in CLA’s School of Language, Culture, and Society at OSU, as well as the Center Director of the Kaku-Ixt Mana Ina Haws. She is also an Indigenous activist, with many interests that relate to Indigenous people.
