In his talk on May 4, Professor Straus will discuss the proclivity toward genocide in the 20th century and the continuing problem in Africa and the Middle East. Among the issues that he will address will be: What, precisely, is “genocide”?; What tends to cause it?; and, What, if anything, can be done to reduce the likelihood of genocidal campaigns in the future?

Scott Straus, a professor of Political Science and International Studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, has published and taught extensively on issues associated with genocide (particularly in Africa) and human rights. He is best known for his award-winning book, The Order of Genocide: Race, Power, and War in Rwanda.
